Who we are
Hoplite Woodworking is a small woodworking shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada founded by Joseph Sones. With the goal of providing our customers and clients with pieces that will last a lifetime, we make use of the natural beauty of wood as we craft premium quality furniture, kitchen items, and much more.
Core Values

Quality
We believe that quality must be paramount. This means that you as the customer can be assured that every effort will be taken to ensure that the piece that you receive will be free from manufacturing defect, and if for some reason there is an issue, we will do our best to rectify the situation.

Sustainability
One of our primary goals is to ensure that, as a company, we are contributing to a manufacturing system that is sustainable long term and to be a positive contributor in that system at every step in our process. From sourcing materials to our manufacturing processes, every effort is taken to offer the most sustainable product possible. Here are some examples:
- Everything we make is completed start to finish in our shop in Winnipeg, Canada with virtually no outsourcing
- Many of our pieces are made using salvaged local hardwood lumber otherwise destined for the landfill
- We offer a variety of natural and low VOC finishes for our pieces as well as natural, shop made waxes for food prep and kitchen items like cutting boards
- By using a combination of traditional and modern joinery techniques, everything we make is built to withstand the test of time, reducing the need for replacement

Heritage
In our shop we use a hybrid approach, making use of both power tools and machines, as well as hand tools and traditional techniques. By preserving time-honoured practices, we do our best to pay homage to the past and to preserve knowledge that enhances the quality and beauty of handmade furniture and woodworking.

Why Choose Hoplite?
Along with the aforementioned core values, choosing to purchase a Hoplite piece gives you benefits that a large producer may not be able to provide. Being a small shop and company, you will be able to correspond directly with the craftsman who will be working on your custom project or has made the item you have purchased. This removes the frustration that often comes with dealing with larger companies where this is not possible. Similarly, if you have a vision for a custom piece, however specific or vague, speaking directly to the craftsman will ensure that all of your options can be explored (e.g. wood species, style, finish, etc.) so that you are satisfied with the end result. We also understand that involvement in the process is not for everyone, which is why we offer in-stock pieces from our collections for sale as well. Additionally, if you come across a piece in our portfolio or anywhere you see a previous piece either no longer in stock or being made, please feel free to enquire about it and it is very likely we will be able to recreate it for you. Thank you for supporting Hoplite Woodworking!
